23-25 Aug - best young divers in the Pacific

Over 60 young athletes from around the Pacific region will gather at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre later this week to compete in the inaugural Pacific Junior Diving Championships. Three Wellington divers will compete in the New Zealand team - Arno Lee, Nayeli Marull & Amelie Greenwood.

Hosted by Diving New Zealand (DNZ), the competition will run from 23–25 August 2019 and will be officially opened by Wellington Mayor Justin Lester.

Age-group divers (12-13yrs, 14-15yrs, and 16-18yrs) will contest on the 1m and 3m springboards, and the 5m, 7.5m and 10m platforms.

DNZ Chair Kelly Sutton says Diving New Zealand aims to establish the competition as a regular event to be held every two years, with different countries taking turns to host the event.

“There is currently no international event available for age-group divers in the Pacific region,” says Ms Sutton. “Diving New Zealand felt strongly that we needed to provide young competitive divers in the region with an outlet to improve their skills, and encourage higher standards of achievement.

“Diving is a growing sport in this country and the championship will showcase the grace and aerial talents of the athletes. Diving really is the original extreme sports - it is exciting to take part, and thrilling to watch.”
